First: treasure the memories on purpose.
Don’t wait for them to “comfort you naturally.”
Pick one memory like a photograph you can hold.
A laugh. A smell. A phrase they always said.
Replay it gently—like medicine, not like torture.
Second: don’t try to carry the whole truth at once.
Your brain will want to time-travel—
to relive the past, predict the future, solve the unsolvable.
Bring it back to one thing you can do today.
One visit. One phone call. One glass of water. One breath.
Third: speak love out loud, even if they can’t answer.
Talk to them like they can hear you.
Say their name.
Thank them.
Tell them what you remember.
You don’t need proof for love to be real.
Fourth: when the end feels close, let kindness become your compass.
Ask the hard question:
“What is the most gentle choice we can make here?”
Because sometimes love isn’t more time—
sometimes love is more peace.
And lastly: you are allowed to grieve while they’re still here.
That confusion doesn’t mean you’re disloyal.
It means you’re human.
Anticipatory grief is real.
And it’s heavy.
So don’t do it alone.
Lean on someone.
Let people bring you food.
Let them sit with you.
Let them be your borrowed strength.
